The inspiration for movie I’m Not Sleepy was a real story of the serial killer Thierry Paulin who murdered several old women in Paris in the eighties. Claire Denis transformed the story from criminal records in an unsettling modern film noir. The movie is centered on three main characters that are directly or vaguely connected to the crime: Lithuanian immigrant Daiga (Jekaterina Golubeva), musician Theo (Alex Descas) and his homosexual brother Camille (Richard Courcet) who is a dancer. Like in her other films, the director refuses to portray psychological life of her characters. Instead, she puts spectators in front of an intricate net of interconnected stories – in their imaginary centre there is the evil which we can hardly understand. Intentionally non-dramatic film is a strange portrait of marginal, socially unacceptable people who restlessly hang on the edge of the society.
